the Gor series starts off as competent sub-Edgar Rice Burroughsian "Planet Stories SF Romance" wide-screen baroque adventure sf with a mild but distinct bondage/S+M tinge, and a definite underlying thread of male dominance-female submissiveness being the natural order of the human species, and this being the only power-relationship between the sexes, with which either can truly be happy;
over the next three or four books, the series improves - without losing these themes - to being interesting adventure story, in which the protagonist has both a hunt to exact revenge for wrongs done to him, and a mystery to solve, before he can achieve this; after which the series imnsho slides off into concentrating on the mild bondage/S+M themes for (again mild) pornographic effect, and upon the male/master, female/slave "natural" order of, and only possible basis for true happiness for, all of humanity.
i gave up reading after the sixth (iirc), but some swear by them for one reasonm or another - including unconscious humour.
