IMT Roleplaying Games Index
A slightly-less-than totally comprehensive list of the RPGs i stock - and i generally stock everything available for the role-playing games i carry - and sometimes a bit more than that...
e-mail me at v$imt$v at my sub-domain, i-m-t.demon.co.uk (written out, to avoid web-crawlers), to check immediate availability, but i update rpg listings virtually every day, and automatically restock every time i sell out of any & all books i carry for these role-playing games - and the restocks usually arrive within one week.
particular other role-playing games may be in stock either transiently, or because i've somehow missed listing 'em; and, if not, are generally as rapidly orderable, usually arriving within one week (so long as in print, or at least in stock at, one of the uk wholesalers).
what is a role-playing game?
very briefly, playing in an rpg is sitting around a room with friends, or people that may well become friends, sharing in creating an adventure story by all but one of you running one of the major characters each, deciding what your character will do - or try to do - based upon what these characters would want to do or choose to do in the circumstances described by the person providing you with all the details of the background, and the words and actions of all the other characters in the story that yours can hear and see.
usually, the player characters will have some aim or ambitions they wish to achieve, perhaps through accepting commissions from older, more experienced, richer and more powerful people in the world, as it's described to them by the gamesmaster (or gamesmistress, or gamesalienbeing - rpgs are an equal opportunity area); eventually, as their experience, resources and abilities grow, so may their ambitions increase and their targets be raised - if they survive; an adventurer's life is liable to prove somewhat more dangerous, than the average inhabitants of a world...
rpg worlds range from the far - and frequently mythical - past, through the eras of classical civilizations, empires and high chivalry, on into the rise of black powder cannon and firearms, through the introduction of techniques of mass production and near-instant communications across a planet, and on into the high-tech advances of space flight, computers, the internet and the worldwide web - and beyond, into the rise and eventual fall of interstellar empires, frequently alien..
..and they are not restricted to reality, to pasts, presents or futures that have (or will) actually occur: any world that you, or anyone else can imagine is potentially available to adventure in.
"in" = rpg (& usually all available sourcebooks, etc.) in shop stock (unless "out of stock" listed against price), and normally automatically re-stocked when required; see the rpg's own page for details of stock and availability
"available" = advised that this is available to order, but not ordered for shop stock [your order may change this; if interested in one or more of these, ask me to check on current availability & price - pp.]
the date given = date of first publication & uk distribution; of stocking in IMT, or first advice of availability (sometimes plus/or date of re-stock, or of re-distribution, especially if long unavailable)
N.B: the main "interesting games" wholesaler has warned that, with the fall of the ukL from us$2 to ~us$1.50, the cost prices and therefore the ukL rrps of games imported from merkia are going to be rising by ~30% above their pre-November 2008 prices as restocks are brought in; this is unavoidable.
some of the new, higher ukL prices have already begun to feed through, so if there are games, sourcebooks, expansions and adventures already in stock (or available from the wholesalers) at the earlier ukL prices converted at ~ us$2 = ukL 1, that you know you want, please don't leave buying them long; their prices could soon easily be (roughly) one third higher than they are now...

Ars Magica
medieval european fantasy rpg that concentrates upon magic-users; geography, bestiary and demonology are as (most) medieval europeans believed them to be, which together make for a uniquely "flavoured" rpg world.
[when Mage rpg was introduced, the world of Ars Magica was its source, and provided its Dark Ages; it has been developed considerably since then, and the
World of Darkness has acquired its own Dark Ages setting, but Ars Magica still serves very well as this, if this be desired of it, as well as a completely independent rpg]

- Dark Heresy RPG - NEW EDITION/PRINTING in 27th August 2008 (first printing new in 23rd January 2008) hardcover was ukL 40.00
dark sf rpg, more or less; the "Warhammer 40,000 RPG" - this is an immensely atmospheric setting translating the world and feel of late medieval Warhammer Fantasy RPG into a near-future equivalent world of paranoia, injustice, intolerance, oppression - and spaceships!
the dominion of the state is close to absolute, comparable with that of the worst modern military dictatorships - and it is a militaristic state, under attack from "outside" by demonic forces.
within this setting, player-characters are members of a squad of inquisitors searching for and rooting out any hint of treachery, or even vocal disatisfaction with the state - they are the iron fist that perpetuates its iron rule.
[and herein lies a major weakness of this otherwise very impressive-looking* rpg: there is no provision in it, for player characters to be fighting this evil state, or even resisting the state's excesses; not only is to do so defined by the state as treacherous heresy, but it is defined by the rpg as being such, too: and no provision is allowed, catered for in the source material, or in the structure of the state system, for principled opposition outside - or within - the empire.
a canny gm will need to go to considerable lengths creating background and organisations, and even the opportunity for a non-demonic alternative to the militaristic brutality of the state, in order to rectify this ommission by the game's creators & publishers; but in repayment, it looks as though it could be very well worth doing so. - ppint.]
this second printing of the first edition incorporates corrections to the errata recognised by its copy date.

stand alone high fantasy rpg set in the well-established world of Katherine Kurtz' fantasy series, in which the Deryni are the remnants of a magically gifted former ruling race, now generally reduced to servants of their conquerors, sometimes loved - but more generally feared - and liable to be subjected to insult, offence, injury & even murder, if not protected by a powerful lord; this persecution is encouraged, and sometimes incited by the powerful Church. the political and military background of the kingdom of "Gwynedd" (which is not really welsh in any significant way, and occupies most of a land-bridged british isles equivalent in turn broadly land-bridged to the not-really-european continent) and the development of nobles' and prelates' plots over the centuries in ms. kurtz' trilogies of trilogies combine to give a very rich high fantasy background within which adventures of many varieties may be set.

The Esoterrorists RPG New rpg available 27th December 2006 ukL 11.99
new rpg written by Robin D. Laws [could this be a spellinge for "Ecoterrorist" ? - no; i've now seen a photocopy of the book's cover, and unless the publishers've got it wrong... pp.]
the Esoterrorists are an amorphous disorganisation of occult terrorists bent on rending asunder the very fabric of reality, and purely incidentally spreading slaughter, murder & mayhem across the world: players' characters are the elite investigators charged with averting the success of the Esoterrorists' plots.
introducing the GUMSHOE rules system, which ensures characters will never again be deprived of clues critical to the successful investigation, if not necessarily the ultimate outcome of any investigative/detective adventure scenario [- unless it suits the timing of the unfolding of the story - and just possibly g.m. for crucial clues to go walkabout at exactly the wrong moment. - pp.].

- Geist: the Sin-Eaters - NEW World of Darkness/Storyteller RPG in 19th August 2009 hardcover ukL 26.99
"Geist" uses the World of Darkness RPG system as the core of the system, but stories (adventures, campaigns) need not be set in the World of Darkness, nor in conjunction with character types from any or all of the associated games;
in it players each run two characters, more or less; the first, someone who has very narrowly survived a perilously near-death experience, during which they became indissolubly bound to a spirit in some way "nearby", of someone who has died with an overpowering urge to remain in the world of the living until they've one way or another managed to see some burning need fulfilled; some similarity in personalities or shared driving urges has drawn them together, and these psychic twins now share their mortal partners' conscious thoughts...
- the second, ghost character played in these pairings is not necessarily completely sympathetic to, or even particularly in harmony with them.
[but i'd advise storytellers/gms to arrange for players of any given human character to not play their own "spirit partner", but rather that of another player's living character in the set-up, else players'll be likely to favour the aims and ambitions of one above the other's interests, no matter how carefully they try to avoid this - yr. hmbl. srppnt.]

a generic rpg written by Robin Laws to be suitable for every possible genre of character roleplay game-playing
encourages input from players, which results in a game not totally under the gm's control, and capable of heading off in directions unanticipated by anyone...
[hmmm? "HeroQuest RPG" ? - and is this not already the title of an rpg, one of the incarnations of RuneQuest ? [see entry immediately above]
this could cause some confusion...

- High Medieval New rpg in 14th September 2005 hardcover (was ukL 23.99; out of stock)
New system promising a high degree of historical accuracy in fantasy role-playing, insofar as this may be appropriate to the fantasy world "reality" that is created for roleplay, being a version of the Middle Ages of this world, with room within it for magic where people of that time knew it to be possible - or believed it to actually exist.
- HOL New edition in 2002 ukL 16.99
acronymously-entitled rpg, expanding to "Human Occupied Landfill", which gives some idea of its ambit;
"Science-Fiction role-playing for gamers who've had a really bad day...
- and are about to suffer much, much more...
Be Advised that HOL is offset from hand-written - though perfectly-legible - text in upper case throughout; you may find this wearying. (um - "it's hand-written in capital letters, and printed straight from this"; i believe it is a style statement - of a kind.) Not amongst the sunniest of dispositioned rpgs
- BUTtery WHOLesomeness is the sole sourcebook, and is similarly styled ukL 14.99
Adds Character Creation, some sample characters (Pope Man & Altar Boy, Tool, The Spud & Tater Tot...); New Skills; Weapons & Armo[u]r; Cults; Hol Sight-Seer's Guide V1 #2; and Diaper Swamp Rules. and Freebase, a - typset, not offset hand-written - sort of Hol Live Action-in-the-Real-World (tm) 8pp pull-out-able "game"; it's overtly based upon the assumption that every other adult in the world is already playing.. ..with your head.. ..and your body.. ..and now it's time for you to start on theirs.
[i suppose you could possibly organise a closed-venue "all consenting adults together" larp of this - but i'm not sure i'd care to play in such a game with anyone who thought it a good idea...
- Intended as a satire, Freebase could come terribly close to larp-ing insanity in a simultaneously still-functioning residential mental care home, if you actually tried it out as written - with none of the constraints provided by the hospital's staff and security... - pp.]

these cavemen would instantly grasp the potential of a heavy, large, laboriously-chipped roughly round, flat stone-with-a-central-hole alright - as the base into which to set a smoothed wooden pole, for "their" women-folk to cavort around...
the comedy caveman rpg re-designed by Robin Laws, created by Bill Holbrook & Ramsey Hoong

can the strength of the Scions suffice to turn the tide in favour of the Gods in this epic conflict?
or is the world doomed to fall into Chaos with the Titans' Supremacy?
the outcome of the struggle has not been decided; but will their faith in Inscrutable Fate and their dismissal of any threat lesser than that of the Titans prove crucial to the result and, if so - which way?

ok; after a ship and a crew, what's needed is - a job. but if you've no track record of reliability, those that come your way ain't going to be particularly well-paying, nor particularly safe - never mind savoury. and when your ship's out in the Black, there's a whole lot more ways of getting your hull full of holes, than there are ways of earning a little on the side, and getting away with it.
there's haulin' cargo, there's carryin' passengers, there's runnin' news'n'messages, there's doin' a little smugglin', there's doin' the odd job on the quiet, like - and there's there's downright thievin'. do as little of the last two as you can, sure; but when needs must...
hope you dodge Alliance Patrols and pirates, get the job done, collect your pay ok, and in full - and hope the Reavers never get to hear what you've been and got up to...

the Universe is a cold & dangerous place, and it's up to the U.S. Space Marines to go in, secure the perimeter, and ensure the primacy of the good old untied states of merkia

written by an experienced, active duty, merkin military officer, apparently, so liable to include the mud, as well as the guts.

Thieves' World New d20 RPG/Campaign Setting; in 24th August 2005
Sanctuary is the armpit of the empire, the seediest city in the world. Other cities have fallen from days of greater glory; what makes Sanctuary unique is that, having lost its reason for existence when it was conquered and lost its own empire, it completely failed to invent another, legitimate role in its conquerors' - if there is an honest person living here, outside of the small detatchment of troops responsible for maintaining order, if not law, in the place, it's probably only because they're too young to leave the cradle. If you enter Sanctuary, you are entering a veritable Thieves' World

Tribe 8 "OGL" (d20)
-
Tribe 8
The Z'bri came - and destroyed our civilisation, using humanity as their playthings.
Then came the Guides, who liberated people from bondage:
but our world remains a shattered place, and our futures lie shattered with it.
Now life in the enclaves is a matter of survival whilst stores of essentials run down, with the knowledge and skills to repair the damage and rebuild scattered, and steadily being forever lost, as the wild tribes sack and pillage their way through these islands of civilisation in a sea of wilderness and barbarism, one by one...

Tri-Stat dX Core System RPG New game in June 2003 ukL 7.99
A coherent, flexible and scalable rpg system that rests upon just three statistcs for each and every player & non-player character; Body, Mind, & Soul. The Power Level of the game is determined by the average (mean or low mode) power levels of the player & non-player characters in it, which in turn indicates which dice will be the most suitable to select for any particular game - hence "dX".
The complete central system book for all of the Guardians of Order Tri-Stat RPGs (see page linked to)
Clearly written, and well laid-out; it looks well thought through and worth more than a cursory glance through - and Jon rates it highly, (read: has gently harassed me about it whilst the wholesalers were out of stock), too!

The Complete Rulebook is back! 5.5th edition adds two chapters, one including Ken St. Andre's houserules, a history of Khazan/Trollworld Timeline, and Michael A. Twilight 2000 RPG in 22nd April 2005 boxed set ukL 24.99 (in stock, though out of print)
the classic GDW rpg of survival in a devestated, post-holocaust world set after a five year-long nuclear & conventional war fought out to & fro across Europe. Nuclear and Smart Weapons Arsenals have been used up, and neither the technology, nor the industrial plant remain, that might make more; Divisions that started the war with 20,000 men (& women) are now scraping the bottom of the barrel to field 2,000 - but the war goes on.
There isn't much of organised military forces left on either side; not enough to fight effectively - but also not enough to make peace.
People remember what civilisation was like - some of them - but it's been unravelling fast; You're somewhere in what used to be Poland, and the last message from your divisional headquarters read: "GOOD LUCK. YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN."

excellent dark future rpg of a decidedly unfriendly and peculiarly paranoidally present day/near future world of the occult underground...
