Ars Magica RPG
The world of Ars Magica is based upon that of the early medieval western and central european idea of this world; magic is real, sometimes tolerated by the church - but often not; geography is as it was then believed to be, and there truly are great expanses of land where there be dragons...
All principal Player Characters are magic-users, in a world where this is not the safest of things to be; but in an interesting twist, players also play minor characters, non-magically talented servants & professionals such as men-at-arms, helping their masters and employers.
[i recommend players play one another's minor characters rather than their own, as in my experience this allows both for interesting interplay between master (or, mistress) & servant and rather better minor character development; it also makes it considerably easier for inexperienced & younger role-players to cope with - ppint.]
Ars Magica's world was also the original root from which that of
Mage rpg sprang; it is still a very acceptable alternative to that of
Mage: the Sorcerers Crusade for Mage campaigns & adventures of a rather different kind, as well as being an excellent historical fantasy setting in its own right.

- Faerie Stories - New title in 19th December 2003 ukL 14.99
Encounters and dealings with Mythic Europe's most infuriating: the Faeries. Set in northern Brittany, in northwestern France, but usable in almost any similar location - it is presumed that the coast is a clear day's travel away by mundane means, but this is not essential. Chapters on the land, lords & the town; five chapters with sections introducing particular ideas & developing story themes from them, including one for an all-grog (magicless retainers) party that manages to annoy some faeirie folk who remove the mage or magi from the proceedings; the grogs are transformed by the irritated faeries who are not feeling downright malevolent, merely evilly mischievous...
a brief chapter describes an otherworldly-atmospheric valley of mists, and its occupants; mostly uninterested in the doings of mortal folk, but rather in their own matters, they are not above taking advantage of those who choose to intrude - and not overly careful of putting their visitors lives or sanity in danger... one amusement being the Hunt, that is introduced to them by the lady of the valley as a major part of her court's annual games...
And in the same setting, details of the Tower in the Rock; an adventure that starts with attempting to find out what has happened to the lady, for she has disappeared, and the animals and lesser faeries of her court troubled, but unable to explain clearly in any terms quite what has happened, when they eventually succeed in making their way to ask for human help.
A chapter of three brief encounters, and an Appendix on Brittany complete the sourcebook written by Phil Masters & Neil Taylor
