(return to Arcanis on the RPG Index page)

    Ars Magica RPG

Mythic Europe Campaign Setting; there is - or was - one dual d20 & native d10 sytem-statted "Coriolis" adventure; elsewise, you'll need to asign d20 stats to the NPCs & beasts (including appropriate monsters!) of this very well-realised "dark ages" fantasy medieval world-as-the-people-of-that-time-knew-it-to-be world setting, in which all major player characters are magic users (and who also incidentally play their characters' non-talented servants & guards).

    Babylon 5 RPG

Science Fiction and/or Time Travel rpg, with low-tech planets offering opportunities of adventures with a fantasy or historical feel

Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM) D20 RPG

Anime (Japanese Cartoon) rpg, with sfnal, horror & more-or-less sexy variations - offering an alternative spin on "fantasy role-playing" - though this is not a requirement.
Uses own Tri-Stat system, or the d-20 system (i believe this latter requires access to the D&D 3rd/3.5th ed. Player's Handbook)
(return to Big Eyes, Small Mouth RPG on the RPG Index page)

The Black Company Campaign Setting - NEW CAMPAIGN WORLD

    in 6th January 2005 hardcover ukL 25.99
Meet Murgen, One-Eye, Croaker, Case, Sleepy, & Goblin, the Lady, if you've not already had the pleasure of their company (in novel form); them and the casts of thousands who live - and die - as the Black Company fight for whoever will pay for their services - and against the legions of hell or the empire, or their own erstwile employers, if they're ill-advised enough to try to cheat them out of their rightful dues - where they cannot lie, cheat, steal, or bribe their way to fulfilling their contracts, and also work their way towards rediscovering aught they can about Khatovar, and the truth of their origins - and incidentally topple dynasties, overthrow empires, destroy nations, battle the horrific Dominator & his Ten Who Were Taken, confront the insidious Shadowmasters - and deal with any minor obstacles, such as powerful enchanters, vast armies and twisted creatures from unimaginable other worlds...
Glen Cook's fantasy world of hard-bitten, flamboyant and cynical mercenaries turned into a 320-page hardcover d20 Campaign Setting by Robert J. Schwalb & Owen K. C. Stephens; giving background world geographical & historical setting overview & details; new rules governing character backgrounds, from priests to harlots; new Character Classes, such as Academician, Scout, & Zealot; and modifications of existing d20 System classes to take advantage of special rules, supporting them through Epic Level rules; New Skills, such as Command, Magic Use, Research; Dozens of New Feats, Prestige Classes, such as Oracle, Topkick, & Great General; Complete Bestiary of Monsters from the Black Company novels; Model Campaigns & Adventure Sparks; Variant Rules, including an all-new freeform Magic System, & Complete Combat System for resolving conflict at Individual Character, unit-with-unit, & full-scale army-with-army levels; details including stats. for all major characters - plus more...
N.B. requires use of the D&D 3.5th Edition Player's Handbook.

    Castles & Crusades D20 RPG

no-one's ever asked me for this fantasy rpg, nor for any sourcebook nor adventure for it; but yes, it is available - i'll ask my suppliers for details, on request - sourcebooks include:

    • Yggsburgh: Moat Gate - NEW SOURCEBOOK - available 23rd April 2008 ukL 5.99
the main entrance to the free town of Yggsburgh is in this district, which accordingly sees a daily hubbub of incoming and outgoing traffic, noble and commoner, and animal & vegetable, as well as human; and with them come foreigners, thieves, other members of the unwashed underclasses, and spies - and adventurers

City of Brass - NEW CAMPAIGN SETTING BOX

in 15th August 2007 ukL 36.99 (out of stock)
"across a shattered plain of volcanic rock with swirling hot winds lies a lake of fire - and hovering above it is your destination, the magical fortress soaring above a sea of flame, a bazaar at the crossroads of the universe, a place of wonder, a fable, an enigma, and rumoured to hold many the secrets of many, arcane artefacts of power, relics both fantastic and foul, where one's greatest dreams and darkest nightmares may be found, for a price: The City of Brass"
"encircled by flames and wrapped in smoke, its shining towers rise up out from the great brass bowl upon which the City is built, accessible only via its massive bridge of polished obsidian; and within its gates lies the greatest repository of arcane knowledge and artefacts of power in all the Planes of Existence." ["~", but phraseology somewhat improved - pp.]
with many maps of both the Planar Nexus and of the City itself, multitudinous artefacts and innumerable foes of great might, and marvellous cunning, even exploring the City in the footsteps of the Prophet is not without its dangers; but should you seek to rob the hitherto impregnable Bank of the Khizanah, or choose to challenge the great Champion, the Titan Hezoid, for possession of his Maul - or possess the temerity to think to outwit the Great Vizier, and overthrow the very Sultan of Efreet himself, and claim the Throne of Brass...
well, you are more like to fail, resoundingly - and to die in exquisitely excruciating pain: but even then, you will add to the Tales of the City of Brass, The One Thousand and One Efreeti Nights. And That in Itself will be More Fame than is Achieved, or Even Looked For, by Most; And a Kind of Immortality.
"Third Edition Rules, First Edition Feel"; written by casey christofferson, scott greene and clark peterson
"Explore the City of the Dead Sultana"

unwary lonely travellers near Cillamar have not been missed when they have disappeared, but it's a different matter when it's Tavernmaster Peter's son; and he has managed to scrape together a couple of dozen gold pieces - mostly of good weight, too - with which he's promised to reward any party that can returmn his son to him, unharmed - or at least, alive. there are clues, indeed one of the party may hold part of one such, and there are rumours a-plenty in the area - has not a weird, black-maned owlbear been sighted on the mountain slopes aboce the town? what might this not portend for the safety of all families? - but at least there's no reason to doubt that the gnomes of the Clockwok Academy succeeded in taking all the orcs who sacked their underground town when they collapsed the tunnels - for none of the Broken Tusk tribe has been seen for nigh-on eight hundred years...
may be played as the prelude to DCC #51: Castle Whiterock, but stands as a separate adventure and may easily be set elsewhere than the world of Aereth.

deep within the heart of the slums of the rat-infested city of Punjar, the Beggar-King sits weaving his plots; and by unearthing rites better left forgotten, offering up sacrifices to the Lords of Shade, his ambitions threaten to unleash a horde of shadow horrors upon Punjar's poorest - unless your party of adventurers succeed in tracking him down to his lair, and bringing the reign of the Beggar-King to an end

now your party is on a firmer trail to explore the mountain fastness and its fabled Dwarven hoard; but within its halls remain ancient deathtraps unsprung - or maybe re-set, by the subterranean stronghold's new occupants?

will your party of intrepid adventurers prove capable of the apparently impossible: slay this leviathan of the murky depths, and return with its head, to claim their reward?

    • Mechanical Dream d20 RPG
One of the most refreshingly strangest rpgs to come along in years; set in a mechanical, technological alternate universe/
set in an alternate dream, but nonetheless real, universe,
the two of which are completely separate from one another/
the two of which are intimately linked with one another...
the world, Kainas, is a circle of light nearly 30,000 miles in diameter, which is but a small part of the planet, Naakinis; surrounding Kainis is the Sofe, an iontangible black wall over 40 miles high, beyond which (it is presumed) there are other worlds of light, which may or may not be circular, and which may (or may not) have their own sentient inhabitants. Light on Kainas is provided by the Pendulum, which slowly oscillates to and fro as though it were attached to the centre of Naakinis; and this light provides Kainis' stability and reality, which fade and then vanish, as the Pendulum disappears (?) behind the Sofe - which is simply a region that is too dense for the Pendulum's light to penetrate/provide reality to. Possibly. When this occurs, Kainis is overtaken by the Dream.
In the Dream, whilst the Dream is real, it is superimposed upon the mechanical world, but does not replace it - though the effects of actions taken within it can impinge upon it...
Candidate for "Weird Fun of the Year Award", Mechanical Dream is, if anything, a more than complete rpg...
(return to Mechanical Dream D20 on the RPG Index page)

What role-playing's really all about - meeting mystical marauding monsters, macassaring them, anit-macassaring them, measuring them, recording them, analysing them, cataloguing them, carving the prize joints off them - and rifling their pockets (if any).
Herein are included such dire and dreadful dementations as the ferocious Potted Plant, the unanticipated Gazebo, the shy and secretive Plutonium Dragon.. ..statted up in all their hideous power, ready to take on the Munchkin d20 adventurer party

claiming to be the most cultured and civilised city in the region, it may also justly be granted the titles of the most decadent, the most socially stratified and the most exploitative - its traders are known far and wide with their black and red-flagged ships, and their hard bargaining for all the produce and manufactures of the south.
independant for just a century, it has prospered greatly since Cheliax released its hold upon the colony, and this book details its wealth, major points of interest, the great and the - perhaps - good movers and shakers of the city, and provides numerous plot hooks for gms

  • Sheoloth: City of the Drow
255pp (+ licences p.) volume covering the entire city of the dark elves in its vast cavern complex, "a skeleton of stone wrapped in tortured flesh and clad in robes of woven silk."
Populated by one of the most viciously violent and depraved races in fantasy, Sheoloth has been expanded slowly, over the ages, as one by one caverns have been opened up and enlarged, or painstakingly chipped out of the native marbles and basalt, with pillars left intricately carved in decoration, or smoothed to a fine polished finish, the better to show off the beauty lying within the natural stone - at a price paid in blood.
Werelights, flickering corpselights, wander the streets, especially in the less well-travelled streets, where poverty-stricken foreigners cluster together - for warmth, or mutual protection?
A place of great, if sometimes strange, beauty; of great cruelties, both straightforward and subtle; of harsh discipline, and simultaneous chaotic violence; Sheoloth is a home created by the drow for themselves, very much in their own image.
Adaptable to any existing campaign, usable as the centrepiece of, or the - sometimes safe - haven whence may commence many an adventure, whether pitting players' characters against the evil rulers of the Underdeep, or hiring them in furtherance of their plans for conquest and destruction, or involving them in the feuding and politicking between the rival drow elf noble clans.
Written by Sam Witt; illustrated by Chad Sergesketter, Eric Bergeron, Philip Renne, Tony Parker, & Alejandro Villen; cover by Chris Quilliams & Anne Stokes.

  • Stargate SG1 RPG
This looks to be a major addition to sf roleplaying, allowing all of the exotic settings familiar from the t.v. series, which it covers in detail, season by season, across the entire history of each culture and as changed, or changeable by characters discovering the ability of the gates to permit travel in time - and as the gm's & players' interests allow, far more besides...

  • Starship Troopers RPG hardcover ukL 29.99 (out of stock)
OGL Militaristic future RPG based on the eponymous a] original novel by Robert A. Heinlein, and b] Verhoeven's (sp?) film based very loosely upon this.
Takes space marine cadets through basic & advanced training, and out into combat against assorted armed enemy ailen species. great on atmospheric detail of the space marines, weaponry, armour, and required background; pretty well ignores civilian society, culture, arts, or any reason for fighting on assorted alien planets, let alone alien cultures & motivations. but if an rpg of space marines, life aboard dropships, the adrenaline spikes before going into action, & the mostly high-tech, but occasionally hand-to-hand combat are what you're looking for in your adventures, this is definitely up there.
To add anything from a touch more of the gritty realism & often blackly humorous side of (spaceborn) military life, to the downright farcical incompetence to which the strictly hierarchically-organised seem peculiarly prone to, i'd strongly recommend also reading Joe Haldeman's The Forever War, and Harry Harrison's Bill, the Galactic Hero (but none of the dire, and much later-written, collaborative sequels to this latter - be warned - ppint.).

The Z'bri came - and destroyed our civilisation, using humanity as their playthings. Then came the Guides, who liberated people from this inhuman bondage: but the world remains a shattered place, and our futures lie shattered with it. Now life in the remaining enclaves is a matter of survival whilst recovered and jealously conserved stores of essentials run down, and the knowledge and skills to repair the damage and rebuild are scattered, and are steadily being forever lost, as the wild tribes sack and pillage - yes, and rape - their way through these islands in a sea of wilderness and barbarism, and one by one, they fall...
