* - the "Sea Wolves" - and, later, the conquerors of most of Britain - Frisians led by royal families variously Anglic, Saxon, Jutish: but first amomgst them, remember Hengist the Great
treachery there was, and not just "clever deceit" upon gullible greedy upon the part of the incoming saxons' leader; a complicated weave with political, social, clan and familial threads;
also playable more as despreate times demanding derring-do from heroes [and, i cannot help thinking, 'twould work very well indeed as the sourcebook to use for a Pendrdagon campaign based upon Men Went to Cattreath ("The Lay of Aneurin" if i've spelled his name correctly), which would fit both demands for heroic deeds and historical accuracy]

"The Matter of Britain" is the chivalric story of King Arthur, both romantic and brutal, as woven by Chretien de Troyes & Mallory around the germ of the core of the British tradition of their resistance to the Saxon & the Irish "Scots" invaders after the departure of the fully-trained, professional soldiery of the Roman legions, the derring do and errantry of a band of knights clad in shining steel plate armour, mounted on heavy horses and led by a warrior-saint with a vision - who was eventually to be betrayed by his closest friend and his own son.
This mammoth source & campaign setting book starts in the reign of King Uther Pendragon, Arthur's father, runs through the long interregnum of the Saxon domination through to the young Arthur's claimimg of the sword, Excalibur, and on into his early reign, his institution of the great Round Table of dedicated knights, the culmination in the Quest for the Holy Grail - and on into the sad twilight years of fading, and eventual failure.
