ASF - Astounding/Analog SF Magazine British Reprint Edition (BRE)

14/11/06 this page is now up to date - save that some of the copies of issues noted as being in stock in "fair-good" condition maybe in slightly poorer condition than listed, and some may be in slightly better condition;
those in slightly poorer condition will be advised to any would-be customer, and priced lower accordingly - and the condition description here corrected.
contents not yet given for all issues; this will take time.

i've just bought a small collection of prozines from a fan moving to a smaller house, brizzle way; the list of issues in stock is now correct; prices given for copies where contents are listed are correct for the copy to which the listing is appended;
now i have to sort out the back room's lighting circuit (the landlord still hasn't - and i suspect will not, anytime soon this century...); i fear the damage is under the flat roof - or under the ground floor, where the landlord's contractor casually looped the cabling c. 25' from the former back wall, to underneath the consumer unit - posh for fuse box - at the front.
and list the zines that've been waiting quietly on their shelves for over a decade, as well as those in their boxes here in the front, that've been waiting patiently for about as long...

Pulp Format Issues:

The Second World War paper shortages forced Atlas Publications Ltd. to reduce the magazine to progressively fewer pages;
n.b. also the contents of the british reprint edition ("bre") do not necessarily correspond to any one issue of the merkin original, being selected by the (uncredited) editor at 18 Bridge Lane, Fleet Street, London (until November 1953 when they shifted to the digest format, reprinting almost the whole of the merkin issue of four months previously).

i'll list the pulps' contents a batch at a time, after i've finished listing those of the digest issues (below).

paper shortages then additionally forced a move to a smaller page-size format:

post world war II the paper supply improved, although there were still "austerity" restrictions (until merkin financial pressure - plus an unprecedentedly fierce winter - forced the popular reforming labour government of clement atlee out of office). A move back up in page-size format (in fact to a size slightly larger than the pre-Augyst 1941 format) was made with the August 1948 issue, at the cost of a price increase and a reduction in the number of copies printed; but the total of page numbers remained at the low of 64 per issue until the paper supply allowed the shift to the digest format with the November 1953 issue:

Digest Format Issues:

the british reprint editions reprint the fiction from the merkin issue of four months earlier; non-fiction "departments" & articles frequently being ommitted (and also odd short stories, occasionally). The format of most ASF "bre" digest issues is approxiately three quarters of an inch taller than that of the merkin original.
The stories themselves are reprinted with the b+w illustrations, but the cover art may not always grace the issue containing the story for which it was commissioned (or, occasionally, vice-versa); i'll eventually list the contents a batch at a time, noting the cover art.

the "tall digest" format was dropped by three quarters of an inch, to the same height as that of the merkin original:

Atlas' bre then reverted to the "tall digest" format:
